Hungary vs Scotland Euro 2024: Scots knocked out in Stuttgart
Scotland crashed out of Euro 2024 in the most heart-wrenching fashion as Kevin Laszlo's goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat by Hungary.
Scotland had the better of the chances in the match, but they were unable to find a way past Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. Laszlo's goal came in the 75th minute, and it proved to be enough to send Hungary through to the knockout stages.
Scotland started the match brightly and had the first chance of the game when Ryan Fraser fired wide. John McGinn then had a great chance to open the scoring but his shot was saved by Gulacsi. Hungary grew into the game and began to create chances of their own. Laszlo had a good chance to put Hungary ahead but he headed wide. The first half ended 0-0.
Scotland continued to press for a goal in the second half. Kieran Tierney had a great chance to score but his shot was blocked by Gulacsi. Hungary then took the lead against the run of play when Laszlo headed home from a corner. Scotland tried to find an equalizer but they were unable to break down the Hungary defense.
The defeat was a bitter blow for Scotland, who had hoped to make history by reaching the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time. They will now have to wait until Euro 2028 for another chance.
Hungary, meanwhile, will be delighted to have reached the knockout stages. They will face the winners of Group B in the last 16.
