MSFT 50 Invades Asus Routers
Asus firmware DNS probing gone wrong
DNS firmware probing tool identifies MSFT 50 as a valid client ID based on high bandwidth usage.
I was surprised to see "MSFT 50" displayed on the Asus router's screen. I immediately checked the network traffic and saw that my router was using several gigabytes of data. I knew that this was not normal, so I started investigating.
I soon discovered that this issue is not limited to my router. A quick search online revealed that other Asus users are also experiencing the same problem. It appears that the issue is caused by a DNS probing tool that is built into the Asus firmware.
The DNS probing tool is designed to identify devices on the network and determine their bandwidth usage. However, it appears that the tool is not working correctly and is identifying MSFT 50 as a valid client ID. This is causing the router to send excessive amounts of traffic to MSFT 50, which is consuming a lot of bandwidth and slowing down the network.
I have tried to disable the DNS probing tool in the Asus web interface, but this has not solved the problem. I have also tried flashing my router with Merlin firmware, but this has not helped either.
I am still trying to find a solution to this problem. In the meantime, I recommend that other Asus users disable the DNS probing tool in their router's web interface.
